Physiotherapy for whiplash and car accident injuries in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the sudden back-and-forth movement of the head, most often in a car collision. It can cause neck pain and stiffness, headaches, shoulder and upper back pain, and sometimes dizziness. Symptoms can appear hours or days after the accident.
How physiotherapy can help
- An assessment of your neck, back and any other injuries
- Early gentle movement and exercise, which supports recovery better than a neck collar
- Hands-on treatment to ease pain and stiffness
- A plan for returning to work, driving and activity
- Massage therapy for muscle tension, alongside exercise
Car insurance and treatment in Alberta
In Alberta, auto insurance pays for physiotherapy for common sprain, strain and whiplash injuries, so you can usually start soon after a collision. Many clinics bill your auto insurer directly. Report the accident to your insurer and tell the clinic about your claim when you book.
Alberta is moving to a new "Care-First" auto insurance system starting January 1, 2027. The province says it is designed to give injured people access to treatment such as physiotherapy for as long as it helps them recover. Ask the clinic and your insurer which rules apply to your claim.
What to expect
Most people with whiplash improve over weeks to a few months. Staying active and following a graded exercise plan helps.
