Concussion physiotherapy in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that shakes the brain. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, trouble concentrating, sensitivity to light or noise, fatigue and neck pain. Most people recover within a few weeks; some have symptoms that last longer.
How physiotherapy can help
Physiotherapists with concussion training can help with:
- Guided, gradual return to activity, school, work and sport
- Exercise programs based on how your symptoms respond to activity
- Treatment for neck pain and headaches that come from the neck
- Vestibular treatment for dizziness and balance problems
- Eye-movement and balance exercises
What to expect
A doctor should assess a suspected concussion first. After that, light activity is usually encouraged early, increasing step by step as symptoms allow. Return to contact sport needs medical clearance.

Common questions
Should I rest in a dark room until symptoms go away?
Current advice is a short period of relative rest, then a gradual return to light activity. Long strict rest usually isn't recommended.
When can I go back to sport?
After a step-by-step return plan and medical clearance. Never return to contact sport while you still have symptoms.
