Physiotherapy for neck pain in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Neck pain and stiffness often come from posture held for long periods, sleeping awkwardly, stress, or a minor strain. It can spread to the shoulders and upper back and sometimes causes headaches.
How physiotherapy can help
- An assessment of how your neck, upper back and shoulders move
- Exercises for mobility and for the deep neck and shoulder-blade muscles
- Hands-on treatment such as joint mobilisation and soft-tissue release
- Advice on desk setup, screen use, sleep position and pacing
- Options some clinics offer, such as dry needling, acupuncture or taping
Massage therapy can ease muscle tension and is often combined with an exercise plan.
What to expect
After your assessment you'll usually get a few exercises to start straight away. Many people improve over a few weeks. If you have pain, numbness or tingling down an arm, your physiotherapist will check your nerves as part of the assessment.
