Physiotherapy for lower back pain in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a physiotherapist. Most of the time it comes from irritated muscles, joints, ligaments or discs rather than serious damage, and most episodes settle within a few weeks. It can still be very painful and make sitting, bending, sleeping or working hard.
How physiotherapy can help
A physiotherapist will ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and check how you move. Treatment usually combines:
- Advice on staying active and which positions and movements to ease into
- Exercises to restore movement and build strength and endurance in the back and hips
- Hands-on treatment such as joint mobilisation or soft-tissue work to reduce pain in the short term
- Other options some clinics offer, such as dry needling or acupuncture
- A plan for work, lifting and sport, and for preventing flare-ups
Massage therapy can also help with muscle tension and comfort alongside an exercise plan.
What to expect
Your first visit usually takes 45 to 60 minutes and includes an assessment and the start of treatment. Many people notice improvement within a few visits, then continue with a home exercise program. The number of visits depends on how long you've had the pain and your goals.

Common questions
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in Alberta?
No. You can book directly with a physiotherapist in Alberta. Some insurance plans ask for a referral before they pay, so check your plan.
Should I rest until the pain goes away?
Usually not. Gentle activity within comfort tends to help recovery more than bed rest. A physiotherapist can help you find the right level.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI first?
Most lower back pain doesn't need imaging. Your physiotherapist or doctor will recommend it if something in your assessment suggests it.
