Pelvic floor physiotherapy in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports the bladder, bowel and reproductive organs. Problems include leaking urine when you cough, sneeze or exercise, urgency, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic or sexual pain, and changes during pregnancy, after childbirth, or after prostate surgery. These problems are common and treatable, and they aren't something you just have to live with.
How pelvic health physiotherapy can help
Pelvic health physiotherapists have additional training. Treatment can include:
- A private assessment, which may include an internal exam if you agree to it
- Pelvic floor exercises taught correctly, including relaxation when muscles are too tight
- Bladder and bowel habits advice
- Support for pregnancy, postpartum recovery and return to exercise
- Rehab before and after prostate surgery
- Pessary fitting at some clinics, for prolapse or leakage
What to expect
Your first visit is longer and private. You can ask questions, decline any part of the exam, and bring a support person. Many people notice improvement over a few months of regular exercises.

Common questions
Is pelvic floor physio only for women?
No. Men see pelvic health physiotherapists too, for example after prostate surgery or for pelvic pain. Each clinic page shows whether it lists female or male pelvic health.
Do I need an internal exam?
It's often the most accurate way to assess the pelvic floor, but it's always your choice. Your physiotherapist can assess and treat in other ways too.
