Physiotherapy for sciatica in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, sometimes below the knee. It happens when a nerve root in the lower back is irritated, often by a disc. It can come with numbness, tingling or weakness in the leg. Leg pain is often worse than the back pain.
How physiotherapy can help
- A careful check of your back, hips and nerves, including strength, sensation and reflexes
- Positions and movements that ease the leg pain
- A graded exercise program to restore movement and strength
- Advice on sitting, sleeping, work and activity while it settles
- Monitoring your nerve signs over time and referring you to a doctor if they change
What to expect
Sciatica often improves over weeks to a few months. Your physiotherapist will tell you what progress to expect and when to involve your doctor.

Common questions
Will I need surgery?
Most people with sciatica recover without surgery. Surgery is considered for severe or worsening nerve problems, or pain that doesn't improve with care.
Should I stretch my hamstrings?
Not always. Some stretches can irritate the nerve. Your physiotherapist will choose movements that suit your symptoms.
