Physiotherapy for shoulder pain and frozen shoulder in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Shoulder pain is common and has several causes: irritated rotator cuff tendons, strain from lifting or overhead work, frozen shoulder (a stiff, painful shoulder that loses movement over months), and pain coming from the neck. Many cases come on gradually without a clear injury.
How physiotherapy can help
- An assessment to work out where the pain is coming from, including your neck
- Exercises to restore movement and gradually strengthen the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles
- Hands-on treatment to ease pain and stiffness
- Advice on sleep positions, work tasks and sport
- Options some clinics offer, such as dry needling or shockwave therapy for some tendon problems
- Rehab after shoulder surgery or dislocation
What to expect
Tendon problems usually improve over several weeks of progressive exercise. Frozen shoulder takes longer, often many months, and physiotherapy focuses on managing pain and keeping as much movement as possible.

Common questions
Should I stop using my arm?
Usually not completely. Keeping the shoulder moving within comfort helps prevent stiffness. Your physiotherapist will guide what to do and avoid.
Do I need an ultrasound or MRI?
Often not at first. Imaging is useful in some cases, such as a suspected large tear after an injury.
