Vestibular physiotherapy for vertigo and dizziness in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
Vertigo is a spinning feeling, often when you roll over in bed, look up or bend down. A common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), when tiny crystals in the inner ear move out of place. Dizziness and imbalance can also follow inner-ear infections, concussion, or other conditions.
How vestibular physiotherapy can help
Vestibular physiotherapists have extra training in the balance system. Treatment can include:
- Testing eye movements and positions to find the cause
- Repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV, which often reduce vertigo quickly
- Exercises to help the brain adapt to inner-ear changes
- Balance and walking training to reduce falls
- Advice on activity and returning to work and driving
What to expect
BPPV often improves within one to three visits. Other causes of dizziness usually need a longer exercise program. Not every clinic offers vestibular rehab, so use the search below to find clinics that list it.

Common questions
Do I need a referral for vestibular physio?
Not in Alberta, but your insurance plan may ask for one. A doctor's assessment is a good idea if the cause of your dizziness isn't clear.
Can a physiotherapist fix vertigo in one visit?
For BPPV, a repositioning manoeuvre sometimes works in one visit. Other causes take longer.
