Physiotherapy for ankle sprains in Alberta
Reviewed by a registered Alberta physiotherapist · October 28, 2026
What it is
An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments around the ankle, usually from rolling the foot inward. It causes pain, swelling and bruising. Without good rehab, many people sprain the same ankle again.
How physiotherapy can help
- Checking the injury and whether you need an X-ray
- Early advice on protecting the ankle, managing swelling and walking
- Exercises to restore movement, strength and balance
- Taping or bracing during return to sport
- Sport-specific drills before you go back to running, jumping or cutting
Balance and strength training reduce the chance of spraining the ankle again.
What to expect
Mild sprains often improve within a couple of weeks. More severe sprains can take six weeks or longer before a full return to sport.

Common questions
Should I keep my ankle completely still?
For most sprains, gentle movement and walking as comfort allows helps recovery. A physiotherapist will guide how fast to progress.
Why do I keep spraining the same ankle?
Balance and strength often don't fully return on their own after a sprain. Targeted rehab helps reduce repeat sprains.
